Ten on Saturday the tenth!

We are on the way to Pere Marquette state park. I have my real camera as well as my iPhone, and of course a Milky Way/Mars bar. I always remember the pure joy of a Mars bar on hikes when I was a kid! Well, we went the wrong way to the park, but a potentially dangerous situation (wrong directions are never pretty, even when confidently spouted out of a phone which answers back) turned good when we stumbled upon Smartt Field where there is a aviation museum of tiny proportions. The Commemorative Air Force, Missouri Wing is a shambolic looking gathering of hangars with impressive planes, including the B25 Mitchell and the 1945 TBM 3, both WWII planes. Spectacularly exciting for the boys in my life! We toured the small airfield and the men who worked there couldn’t have been happier to answer all and any questions. Saturday 11am, here we were. A happy wrong turn indeed! I think Bodhi has this on his birthday list…. This however, is not on mine, but it …

Happy on the Trail!

Seven o clock  on  Sunday morning, first stop was to photo these frosty leaves – I just can’t walk about without spotting things to photograph, even in the freezing cold! I was on my way to meet my friends to go and run at Castlewood State Park. I have hiked there before and admired the runners hopping about like mountain goats, but I have never run a trail with rocks, leaves, mud, a creek, 300 steps and a giant hill.   This was going to be my mountain goat moment. At the beginning of the chilly trail, I had my water, gloves and Stinger honey gel (yes, I was feeling that unsure of my legs that I equipped myself with energy gel). Ready to hop skip jump and run six lovely tree filled miles. One of the best runs I have done. No pressure, stay upright, one foot in front of the  other and keep going, my usual running rules.   About those 300 steps, I walked them!  Check out the view from the top. …

October 2012 Photo A Day

Day 1. Where You Stood. Chilly out, wet footprints on a skateboard ramp destined for the tri city yard sale on Saturday. Day 2. Lunch. Miso soup with pot stickers. This is something I will often have for lunch, but I did plan a little bit around the daily photo for this one. Check the chopsticks! I ate the soup with a spoon…. Day3. This happened today. I went to Trader Joes for pumpkin bread ingredients and to Target for socks for Bodhi and parchment paper. Day 4. What you read. I have either read these today, am reading them or am going to read them for bedtime stories.  ‘Mary Poppins’ is our bedtime read. You ‘Wouldn’t Want to be a World War II Pilot’ was last nights read, it is quite informative! Day 5. Shadow. Drink anyone? I took this on the iPhone 4 camera, added 1962 in Camera Bag, then into Camera+ to add clarity and color dodge. Love playing with photo apps! Day 6. I’m thankful for.   Amazing yard sale finds …

Reasons to go to spin class

I went spinning this morning. Please don’t be impressed at my verve to stay fit and spry.  There are many reasons for my attendance and non of them indicate a desire to become a healthy human!  I went because I would have gone straight back to bed if I went home.  I had my gym bag ready at the door before we left for school so I might as well use it.   I wanted to take my daily photo, theme today was ‘This happened today’  and I wasn’t planning on going anywhere else so I needed a remotely interesting photo.  I know, really, I think a photo of a spin room is an interesting option….. My friend who was also planning on taking the class kindly guided me to the YMCA after school drop off, so what choice did I have.  Spin class completed, I sweated like a leaky water fountain and had wobbly legs afterwards, but I felt good dammit! I am now standing in the woods writing this on my phone while …

Inhaling colour and fabulousness!

Actually trying to get into a complete utter mess is not an typical Saturday morning in my life! Having said that The Color Run is no typical morning. We all caught the Metro Link along with a train full of white shirted Color runners. Downtown St Louis for the start. Everyone started the run in ‘waves’ of about a thousand at a time which takes a while waiting, but it keeps everyone spread out and there were no bottle necks along the route. As we passed each color station we were ‘squirted’ with colored corn starch out of giant ketchup bottles. Not much pink at the first color squirt, but in hindsight, I didn’t mind the lack of pink as it was the only color still on my shirt and face after washing! Through each station, the black asphalt was pure color. The air was full of color dust like a rainbow was smoking beneath it. I was glad of my sunglasses but my water bottle was caked like a kids paintbox! Not very tasty! …

Packed and ready to layer

Started today with a sunny and sweaty bootcamp class on the High School track. Exercising outside in St Louis is a brutal thing in the summer, but think of the toxins I sweated out. Oh, and the wine from last night! Dropped some jewels off at the fabulous ‘Screaming Mimi’ in Maplewood.  Go and check them out, lots of wonderfuls in there! Favourite sandwich stop for lunch – ‘Fozzies’ on Big Bend. I had the chicken gyros on pita with salad and feta and it was delish! Home to cram a last minute bargain t shirt in my suitcase for our UK trip. Got the shirt and a lovely scarf from ‘Mezzanine’ on Sutton Blvd in Maplewood. They are closing which is a shame as it is a lovely store to go and dream about affording anything in there. We also got a massive and fabulous glass vase for five dollars. I know this scarf is black and not exactly summery, but England is not exactly summery at the minute either. I have booked some …

Field Day

My first job today was to plant lots of these windmills all around the paths at school for field day.  I snapped this one before they got a good washing from the rain and storms which were coming. Windmill before the rain The day well and truly started with a bang,  a thunder clap actually!  Followed by another and another… We waited out the big black, party pooping storm and resumed in the afternoon.  By which time it was nice and steamy outside.  Ideal for running around a giant parachute with lots of small energetic children! Parachute fun  The kids ran races, threw baseballs for all they were worth, jumped long and high.  Ribbons were won and faces were red and everyone had a grand old time! ‘We are Family’  Probably the only shirt which is worn to be drawn and written on! Field day and all of it’s celebration, in a cardboard box

Gliding, sliding and planking

I did my first ‘Gliding’ class today at the Y. Wondering if I was doing the right thing, sacrificing my spin class which is always a sure fire sweat fest. I like to get a damn good workout when I do a class or go for a run, so no pressure then! Gliding discs A step and two gliders needed and quite the workout it was. Lunges and planks on these things give the core and leg muscles a good burn. Lots of core and lots of leg which was a good combo. Arms got a turn with high planks and push ups all on an ice like surface provided by these 2 nylon discs. Sunbathing Box Turtle On the way home I spotting this little fella catching some rays in the woods!
