Genesis Moment for CatsEatDogs Jewellery (that’s me!)

The Genesis Moment idea is the brainchild of the wonderful Rachael at The Bowerbird Girl blog. What was my ‘Genesis Moment’, the moment of ‘aha, that is what I want to do when I grow up’ for me? How has that developed into what I do now, what I am known for? That is the question and a tricky one I think, I am still not really sure what I want to do when I grow up. Do I have an answer, well yes, thanks for asking, I do.

I have been making jewellery for a good many years, mainly for myself and now I sell it too. Only recently have I found my ‘what I do’, the ‘What are you known for’ part of the Genesis Moment.
To be honest, I used to make jewels which I knew would be popular but they really weren’t my style, but someone had asked, so I obliged. These pieces are never your best work are they, kind of someone else’s idea really.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of taking a class instructed by the amazing, inspiring and brilliant Stephanie Sersich to make her signature ‘Spiney Knotted Bracelet’. I used a gorgeous selection of beads and thread provided by Stephanie, followed along closely and made my first bracelet. The whole experience of the class and the finshed bracelet set the wheels of my brain spinning.

My style is simpler than this, but the techniques are so versatile that I continued to work with the linen thread and with the macrame knots. Eventually, I developed my own range of wrap bracelets which are long long long and can be worn as a necklace or a bracelet and sometimes an ankle bracelet. My own stash of CatsEatDogs wrap bracelets shows how much I love them and I will wear two or three at a time.

I have made necklaces and earrings with the linen as the constant base and all design hurdles are overcome with techniques I learnt from Steph.
Colour is a big part of the bracelets for me and I love to mix up beautiful colour combinations and bead textures all fastened with a unique vintage button from my every growing button collection.

Do you have a Genesis Moment? Do share in comments, I would love to hear from you!

  1. Clare I LOVE THESE! They are beautiful and such a gorgeous signature style for Girl Fifteen. Where do you sell them? Please say you sell them online, then someone all the way over in NZ will have the chance to own a special piece that she will treasure!!!
PS. Blog is looking good too. I need to learn how to do that taggy thing you do at the bottom! It’s a lot more accomplished than the saggy thing I do with my bottom (he he he!)

  2. Yay Clare, another one joins the linky party [insert that party noise here]. Thanks so much for sharing, I don’t know what it is but I just find it so inspiring hearing about other people’s genesis moment. It’s just so interesting! Someone should write a book full of them. I’d totally buy it šŸ™‚ Your bracelets are lovely and i love the photo of them – that really suits their organic forms there on the branch in the foliage. Like they were born there.

Such a great idea Rachael, I had a couple of ideas to use for it and I am pleased I ended up using this one. Quite a nice first post on my blog. I also have the other ideas for future posts! Yay. You had better get started on that book!
