Somewhere in the recesses of my brain, I remember that protein is an ideal post workout foodstuff. With that in mind I often make a yum scrum smoothie after a kickboxing or spin or weights or cardio class. Want to try it? I have finished mine, so I can’t share, but here is the vague recipe.
Post Workout Smoothie
Half cup milk
2-3 dessertspoons yogurt
1 big dessertspoon almond or peanut butter
1 dessertspoon Nutella or drinking chocolate power
I banana
Whiz it all up with a hand blender or in a blender of your choosing.
Confession time. I had almost finished this before I remembered to photo it!! Ha. So here is a glass nice and full.
This is my favourite glass and it used to be my Grandma’s. It is a teeny tiny glass which stands about two inches high and I think she drank Sherry in it! I finished the last of my smoothie in it today. Cheers Grandma!
Appropriate then that I am also making and sharing Grandma’s Biscuit Cake recipe today. I have her handwritten recipe books and this cake is a treasure in itself. I hope we all keep recipe books or cards to pass on, I don’t think a ‘Pinterest’ board will be quite so impressive!
Biscuit cake
8-10 oz or about 5 cups Graham crackers/gingersnaps/shortbread/digestives/hobnobs or any other biscuit/cookie which will crush up with out going mushy. No on the Oreos then, although maybe they would work..try them and let me know!
4oz or 1 stick butter
Teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons honey or golden syrup
2 tablespoons drinking chocolate powder (I use malted chocolate Ovaltine)
A handful of dried fruit, choc chips, nuts or anything else you fancy (optional)
Melt the butter and honey/syrup, add the drinking chocolate powder and vanilla. Crush the biscuits into little chunks. I put them in a zip loc bag and bash them with a rolling pin – be careful not to make a load of holes in the bag though.
Mix the crushed biscuits into the butter and honey and press into a 8×8 square lined tin. As you can see, I didn’t line this pan and they were a bugger to get out, so I would recommend lining with parchment.
Cover with melted chocolate (I used about 2 cups of choc chips)
Chill until set. Cut into about 16 squares. The chocolate stays rock hard if you keep it in the fridge, so where you store your cake depends on whether you like your chocolate hard or not. I will keep in an airtight container, but it won’t last long!!
Make a cup of tea or a nice frothy coffee and share with a friend.
What do you eat after a workout? Do you have a recipe to share? Please do, leave me a comment!
I add some chia seeds to my smoothie. I tend to use a little bit of unsweetened yoghurt, some calci trim milk, berries or a banana and chia seeds dissolved in some water. Or I may swap the chia seeds and use a teaspoon of flax seed oil. Love your grandmas recipe. I am like you and think things like recipe books should be preserved and passed on.
